How to Hang Art Correctly: 3 Easy Tips

We all know that decorating our homes can be a daunting task, and finding the perfect artwork is just the beginning. The real challenge often lies in hanging it correctly. Many of us end up with a stack of unframed pieces or a wall full of holes. After years of hanging artwork in galleries and homes, I’ve developed some straightforward techniques to help you get it right. So, dust off those frames and let’s get started.

Things You Will Need:

Tape measure
Level
Hammer
Nails

Tip #1: Hang Your Artwork at Eye Level

During my time at a gallery, I learned that hanging artwork at eye level is crucial for achieving the perfect view and balance in your space. Aim to place the center of the artwork 60-63 inches from the floor. Here’s how to calculate it:

Measure the height of your frame.
Divide that height by 2.
Subtract the distance from the top of the frame to the framing hardware.
Add that number to 60 inches.

Example: If the calculated number is 67 inches from the floor, measure, hammer, and hang your artwork accordingly!

ip #2: Hanging Your Artwork Above Furniture

Creating a striking accent wall above furniture, such as couches, beds, or reading nooks, can elevate your space. To achieve the best look, hang your artwork 4-6 inches above the top of the furniture.

Example: If you're hanging artwork above your couch, position it 4-6 inches above the couch’s backrest. Measure, hammer, and hang your artwork to complete the look!

Tip #3: Hardware

When buying artwork from professional artists, it often comes with a convenient wire backing. However, for artwork and frames from department stores, you might need to do a bit more work.

If your artwork has a zig-zag claw on the back, you can easily hammer in one nail and hang it.
For artwork with two separate hooks on the back, don’t worry if they’re not connected. Simply purchase framing wire from your local craft store, connect the two hooks with the wire, hammer in one nail, and hang your piece.
For large and heavy artwork, buy heavy-duty hanging hardware from a craft store. Check the packaging for weight recommendations to ensure it can support your artwork.Since we cannot go to our local hardware stores, Check out Amazon for the perfect framing hardware.
